To Do List or
Living in the Moment
It was early Sunday afternoon, September 9th, the
sun was shining and what in the world would be better for a 3 and ¾ year old
than collecting stones out of the river rock pathway.
My personal to do list was full. The freezer that partially defrosted needed
to be dealt with, breakfast and now lunch dishes needed to be done, the
dishwasher was clean and therefore needed emptying and most importantly it was
the first Sunday of NFL football.
“Dad, which rock do you think is the most beautiful?”
“Dad, what does this rock remind you of?”
“Dad, do you want to buy some of my rocks?”
“Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, how come you’re not answering me?”
“Can’t you see I am trying to do the dishes, I have to tidy
up the freezer and the dishwasher needs to be emptied. I don’t have time to check out the rocks
right now!! (stearnly).
Instantly my spirit felt heavy, I knew something was out of
place. Could it be me, no it couldn’t
possibly be me.
Yes, it was me -out of priority and feeling heavy on the
heart.
This time of year I always find the “to do” list is getting
bigger. There are new school routines,
snacks and lunches to be made, piano to be practiced, take home reading to be
done, proper bed times to be maintained, teeth to be flossed, practice to get to, etc etc etc.
This year (after all it is the unofficial New Year) I commit
to being fully engaged and enjoying the moment.
Never mind being bogged down by the “to do” list!! I’m not missing out on life while attempting
to check off the “to do” list.
End of life studies always say that humans have two greatest
regrets: relationships and health.
Perhaps these are our two most valuable assets? Lets engage in them fully. After all, when I’m giving that wedding
speech or taking my last breath, I’m not going to be remember all the times I
unloaded the dishwasher.
Be Amazingly Blessed,
Dr. Matt
